The History Shelf

The past, told well. We curate history the way we curate everything else — pickily. Church history and the Reformers, the ancient and medieval world, America's story, and the wars that shaped it, chosen for writing worth a slow, attentive read.

The shelf runs on two tracks: new & notable titles worth buying now, and a deep bench of used & vintage copies — out-of-print and hard-to-find, one copy each, shipped from Chattanooga.

How we choose

Every book on this shelf is checked before it goes up. We read the publisher's description, trade and reader reviews, and look at the author's earlier work.

We look for

We leave off

History is often hard reading. Books on war, slavery, or genocide have to describe terrible things, and we don't hold that against them. When a book's descriptions of atrocity or abuse go well beyond what readers of that subject would expect, we add a content note.

Some histories argue a point of view. We include them when the history underneath is solid, and we say so in the description.

If you read one and think we missed something, write to us at info@thepickyreader.com.

New & Notable

New & forthcoming history

Current-year releases only — no backlist padding. Every date and ISBN confirmed on the publisher’s own page. A quiet category some cycles is honest; we don’t fill it for the sake of a full shelf.

New church history releases are catalogued on The Theology Shelf, alongside the historical theology they sit next to — browse them on the theology release calendar. Used and vintage church history stays here on the History Shelf.
